The race was first held as a Principal race over a mile (about 1600m) in 1939, when it was won by Amiable. In 1948 the distance was increased to 1.25 miles (about 2000m) and was held at that distance from 1948 to 1963 then returned to a mile from 1964 to 1972, then it bt became 1600m in 1973 with metrification. In 1979 it was upgraded to the current Group 2 status. The distance became 2040m from 1987 to 1997 apart from 1995 when it was held over 2000m. It returned to 1600m in 1998 until 2010 apart from 2001 when t was held over 1509m, and has been at the current 2040m from 2011 onwards.
